During the summer, many people gather here, while in the winter, the soothing sound of the rushing water invites you to unwind. The Flaucher is a popular stretch along the Isar River for picnics, refreshing baths and leisurely strolls.
The change of the seasons is especially pronounced in Munich, as the city is dotted with lush green landscapes. The Flaucher – a section along the Isar (river) between Brudermühlbrücke and the southern city limits – is a popular meeting hub for all outdoor enthusiasts.
The name goes back to innkeeper Johann Flaucher, who opened the "Zum Flaucher" inn in 1870. It is still there today and a beer garden and playground have been added, making the inn a popular hub in the summer. To get a first overview, it is always worth taking a short stroll over the Flauchersteg, a pedestrian bridge about 340 metres long that connects Sendling with Thalkirchen and Untergiesing-Harlaching.
In the warmer months, the wide gravel banks along the Isar turn into a picnic and barbecue spot. Beer crates are placed in the babbling current to cool them down, while the smell of bratwurst fills the air. Those who seek refreshment after a visit to the zoo, can take a dip in the crystal-clear, pristine water. For kids, there's also a great place at the Flauchersteg pedestrian bridge where they can play safely in the pools and clamber onto larger stones.
Locals joke that this place is like the Stachus, drawing a parallel between the lively atmosphere at Flaucher and the bustling city centre. It is indeed buzzing here during good weather, but you can always find a secluded nook to spread out your towel. By the way, there is also a nudist area that is well frequented and popular. So don't be surprised to see sun worshippers in their natural state on the wildly romantic shoreline.
Winter presents a completely different picture. Then the gravel banks are blanketed in snow and the only sounds you hear are the crunching under your boots, the gentle murmur of the river, or the almost silent glide of skiers along the 5.5-kilometre-long cross-country ski trail in the south-eastern Isarauen (Isar river floodplains)
The Flaucher offers a valuable habitat for various animals: Crayfish seek shelter beneath the stones, brown trout swim in the stream, song thrushes and kingfishers nest in the area and even gulls are at home here. In winter, you often come across swans, geese or coots in their black plumage and white beaks. The renaturation of the Isar, accomplished through the "Isar Plan" project in 2011, marked a significant milestone in nature conservation and has transformed the area into an appealing local recreational space.
You can easily reach the Flaucher from the city centre in 10 minutes via the U6 suburban line heading towards Klinikum Großhadern (hospital). Just get off at the Thalkirchen stop (Tierpark Hellabrunn (Hellabrunn Zoo)) and you have reached your destination.
