There are some beautiful monasteries in Munich's surrounding area – besides Andechs and Ettal, the monastery in Benediktbeuern is also a very popular destination. It is located near Kochelsee (lake) and is one of the oldest of its kind: the monastery was founded as early as the 8th century, and beer was brewed here from the 13th century onwards. Today's baroque complex was built between 1669 and 1732 and can be discovered on a guided tour of the monastery. Afterwards, be sure to stop at the Bräustüberl with its beer garden or the monastery café.
How to get there: It takes about an hour by regional train direct from Munich to Benediktbeuern. From the station, it's only a few minutes' walk to the monastery.
Other beautiful destinations: Reutberg monastery (station: Kloster Reutberg, Sachsenkam)
There is hardly any other lake in Bavaria where you can experience as much as on Chiemsee: Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy sailing, surfing, stand-up paddling, kayaking or canoeing, while visitors interested in culture can head for the Fraueninsel (island), the Seeon monastery or the world-famous Schloss Herrenchiemsee (palace). It was built under King Ludwig II after the model of Versailles. In fine weather, you can also go cycling, boating and, of course, swimming in Bavaria's largest lake.
How to get there: There is a direct connection from Munich's main railway station to Prien am Chiemsee that takes less than an hour. From there, you can continue by boat, bus or the Chiemsee train.
Other beautiful destinations: Starnberger See (lake) (stations: Starnberg, Tutzing, Bernried)
An excursion to the Klamm (gorge) – that might sound like an experience for advanced mountaineers. Not so with the Partnachklamm, because it is easily accessible, open in all seasons and also suitable for children. In summer, the numerous waterfalls in the gorge provide a pleasant climate, in winter you can marvel at huge icicles. The millennia-old mountain gorge near Garmisch is a real natural spectacle and the perfect combination with a hike.
How to get there: The train takes about an hour and 20 minutes from Munich direct to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Here, you can either hike to the Klamm in 40 minutes or take the bus halfway to the “Olympia Sprungschanze” (Olympic ski jump).
Other beautiful destinations: Höllentalklamm (gorge) (station: Hammersbach)
Medieval Regensburg is one of the largest in Germany and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you can explore some special buildings on a day trip, such as the 12th century Steinerne Brücke (Stone Bridge) or the 13th century Regensburg Cathedral. Don't miss a bratwurst sandwich at the historic “Wurstkuchl” sausage kitchen and a city tour by boat, since Regensburg is also known as the “city of four rivers“.
How to get there: It takes about one and a half hour by train from Munich to Regensburg – without changing trains. And Regensburg's Valhalla at the gates of the city is also easy to reach by bus!
Other beautiful destinations: Landshut (station: Landshut)
Walchensee is one of the oldest, largest and, at 190 metres, one of the deepest Alpine lakes in Germany. It is also known as the “Bavarian Caribbean” for its water’s lovely turquoise shimmer. You can admire the lake either while swimming, windsurfing or from the mountains. The Walchensee is surrounded by Munich's most popular local mountains, such as the Jochberg (1,565 m) and the Herzogstand (1,731 m). The Herzogstandbahn (train) offers a comfortable ascent to the Herzogstand mountain!
How to get there: The Werdenfelsbahn train runs at hourly intervals and it takes about an hour from Munich to Kochel. From there, a bus takes you to the “Walchensee Herzogstandbahn“ station in 20 minutes.
Other beautiful destinations: Kochelsee (lake) (station: Kochel am See)
At 2,962 metres, the Zugspitze is Germany's highest mountain and easy to reach from Munich by public transport. There are various ways to get to the summit: quite comfortably with the historic rack railway, which takes 75 minutes from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, or with the modern and faster Zugspitzbahn. The latter takes you from Lake Eibsee to the summit in just ten minutes. Those who prefer sporting activities can choose one of the four hiking routes with varying levels of difficulty. At the foot of the Zugspitze mountain lies Lake Eibsee, which, with its islands and turquoise water, is reminiscent of the Caribbean. It invites you to swim and cycle in summer and to hike in winter.
How to get there: It takes one hour and 20 minutes by train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From there, take the rack railway or a bus to “Grainau-Eibsee“.
Other beautiful destinations: Bad Reichenhall (station: Bad Reichenhall)
Every weekend, many people from Munich and the surrounding area embark on a journey to Tegernsee – no wonder, because the lake is not only close-by and beautiful, but also diverse. Some hike along the Tegernseer Höhenweg or the Wallberg, others visit the Olaf Gulbransson Museum, go swimming or rent a boat. Additional interesting destinations are the Naturkäserei Tegernsee – a natural cheese dairy, the Slyrs distillery or the Büttenpapierfabrik - a factory for handmade-paper in Gmund. At the end, everyone gathers in the beer garden of the Bräustüberl (traditional Bavarian restaurant)!
How to get there: The journey from Munich main station to Tegernsee station takes just over an hour. To Gmund am Tegernsee (at the north of the lake) you drive 50 minutes. You can reach the towns around the lake using the “Ringlinien” bus.
Other beautiful destinations: Schliersee (lake) (station: Schliersee)
Murnau and its surroundings are also known as Blaue Land – the land of Blauer Reiter, because this is where the members of the “Blauer Reiter“ artist group, including Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter, met. The beautiful Münter House not far from Murnau railway station is a reminder of this time. Other important sights include the castle museum and the Murnauer Moos nature reserve – the largest enclosed moorland in Central Europe. A nice point to start the journey is the Ähndl restaurant.
How to get there: The regional train takes about an hour to Murnau, from there you can either walk or cycle on to the Murnauer Moos.
Other beautiful destinations: Mittenwald (station: Mittenwald)
