Elegant designer stores standing amid cafés, bars and restaurants make appealing shopping settings with an extraordinary atmosphere.
Theatinerstrasse 15
In the Fünf Höfe (Five Courts) on Theatinerstrasse, hanging gardens, fancifully designed inner courtyards as well as a giant floating sphere by the sculptor Ólafur Elíasson give shopping a sensual element. Here you will find noble designer stores cheek to cheek with cafés and offices. Those who have time and muse after their shopping spree can visit one of the excellent traveling exhibitions at Kunsthalle. The complex was designed by the prominent Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron.
Brienner Strasse 13
The classical buildings in the city’s central Brienner Quartier mirror the elegance of high-class shopping culture. During the Regency period, a number of exquisite shops were established directly beside the Residenz palace, some of which are still family-owned today. Why not take a gentle stroll through the area and experience the unique blend of the traditional and the modern for yourself? At the same time, you can browse the bespoke shoes, designer fashion, valuable books, precious antiques and modern art on offer.
Theatinerstrasse 1
In the heart of Munich’s old town you’ll find superb stores and exquisite cuisine. Offering international fashion, elegant accessories and creative ideas for interior design, the Schäfflerhof is a shopper’s paradise. This complex, close to the Gothic Frauenkirche, is faced with brick to evoke a typically Munich architectural look. The Swiss architect who designed it, Ivano Gianola, chose the material to act as a visual bridge between the 15th-century church and this modern building.
Sendlinger Strasse 10
The Hofstatt opened in 2013 and quickly became a hub in the district between Marienplatz, Karlsplatz-Stachus and Sendlinger Tor. Showcasing chic fashion, furnishing and lifestyle products in its stores, this stylish arcade is one of Munich’s top shopping locations. Swiss architect Marcel Meili created the Hofstatt by incorporating listed buildings and new elements on the former site of the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Maximillianstrasse 11
The shopping centre on Maximilianstrasse is home to international luxury brands. Labels including Brioni, Bottega Veneta, Ermengildo Zegna, Versace and Dolce & Gabbana all have outlets in the Maximilianhöfe. If you need a quiet place to sit after braving the crowds in Maximilianstrasse, you won’t have to go far: the benches in the interior courtyard are the ideal place to take a break from shopping.
