Guided tour through the Residence Palace with an official tourist guide.
You will visit the Residenz, the former seat of the Wittelsbach rulers. As it did for many centuries the Residenz Palace marks the historical core of Munich still today. A vast ensemble extends behind representative facades; its individual buildings are grouped around ten courtyards.
Particularly noteworthy is the Antiquarium, the largest secular Renaissance hall north of the Alps as well as the oldest part of the Residenz. It primarily served as an exhibition hall for antique sculptures and was used under Duke Wilhelm V, and later also his son Maximilian I, as a banquet hall for show dinners.
Since the end of the 16th century the vaults and the window reveals have been decorated with sovereign virtues and more than 100 views of towns, markets and palaces in what was then the Duchy of Bavaria.
Included are also the rooms from the early 17th century (Ornate Chapel, Stone Rooms and Trier Rooms, etc.), the splendid Rococo creations (Ancestral Gallery and Ornate Rooms) as well as the Classicistic King’s Tract which was commissioned by Ludwig I and created by Leo von Klenze.
Nowadays, musical performances are on the programme in the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche. On the way there, the All Saints' Walk, you find pictures of Italy which are underlined by King Ludwig I's own poetry – since he was a great Italian fan throughout his life.
On display are also special collections, such as the silver and ecclesiastical vestment chambers as well as porcelain from the 18th and 19th centuries and from East Asia.
Tip: Note the changing exhibitions of special collections in the Residenz, one of the largest spatial art museums in Europe. Also worth a visit are the Residence's Treasury and the Cuvilliés Theatre.
